Universities in Orissa

Orissa state,  which was known as Kalinga in ancient times, has been named as Odisha since 2011. It is located on the east coast of India, by the Bay of Bengal. Area-wise it is the ninth largest state, and the eleventh largest by population. Ratnagiri, the ruins of a major ancient university and center of Buddhist learning, was recently discovered in the Jajpur district in Orissa. The Indian government  has selected the coastal land from Paradip in the north to Gopalpur in the south, to be developed into one of five or six Special Economic Regions (SERs) of the country.

Education sector in Orissa is undergoing some major improvements. Bhuwaneshwar, the capital of Orissa has numerous new public and private universities, including the an Indian Institute of Technology in the city. Orissa government conducts a competitive Joint Entrance Examination (OJEE) annually to select students for admission into the various engineering colleges.

Universities of Orissa awards academic degrees in a numerous subjects, including English, Botany, Public Administration, Political, Geography, Law, Engineering, and the like. The National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER) is a chief research institution in India. The state has numerous institutions which are nationally and internationally recognized.

Established in the year 1946, Utkal University, the 17th oldest university in India, is one of the most premier universities of the state. Many universities of Orissa are well equipped with facilities such as computers and Internet connectivity to promote quality education. Career building courses in Biotechnology, MCA computer applications, MTech computer Science and the like are offered in the various universities of the state.

Another important University in Orissa is the Berhamphur University,  offering courses such as Electronic Science, Tourism and Indian Monuments, Marine Science, Military Science and the like.  Facilities such as hostels, library, Museum, shopping complex etc are also provided by the University.
